How to Craft Bricks in Minecraft and Make Stone Variants

What “bricks” means in Minecraft

Minecraft has two different building materials that players commonly call bricks:

• Bricks are the red-orange blocks made from clay balls.
• Stone Bricks are the gray blocks made from regular stone.

They use different materials and different preparation steps. A brick item is not a placeable block by itself. You must craft four brick items together to create one Bricks block. Stone, on the other hand, is already a block, so four stone blocks can be crafted directly into four Stone Bricks.

The same basic recipes work in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. The important detail is to use regular stone for Stone Bricks, not cobblestone. Cobblestone must be smelted first.

How to craft bricks in Minecraft

Collect clay balls

Find clay blocks underwater or along the bottom of rivers, lakes, swamps, and other wet areas. Break a clay block to collect clay balls. A shovel breaks clay quickly, but you can also mine it by hand.

For one Bricks block, you need four clay balls because each clay ball smelts into one brick item. Gather the following:

• 4 clay balls for 1 Bricks block
• 1 furnace
• Fuel such as coal, charcoal, wood, or a lava bucket

Smelt clay into brick items

1. Open the furnace.
2. Place clay balls in the upper input slot.
3. Place fuel in the lower fuel slot.
4. Wait for the clay balls to smelt into brick items.
5. Move the brick items into your inventory.

Each clay ball produces one brick item. You cannot place the individual item in the world, so continue to the crafting step if you want a building block.

Craft the Bricks block

Open a crafting table or your inventory crafting grid and place four brick items in a square. Put one brick in each slot of the top-left 2×2 area, leaving the rest of the grid empty. This produces one Bricks block.

The crafting-grid layout is simple: place four brick items in the top-left, top-right, bottom-left, and bottom-right slots of a 2×2 square. The exact position inside the larger 3×3 crafting table does not matter as long as the four bricks form a square.

How to get bricks without crafting the block first

If you need individual brick items rather than red building blocks, smelt clay balls and stop after the furnace produces the bricks. Brick items are useful for crafting Bricks blocks, flower pots, and decorated pots.

You can also find bricks through some generated loot and obtain them from certain decorated pots, but smelting clay is the most dependable survival method. Clay is renewable, and a furnace lets you turn it into as many brick items as your fuel supply allows.

For a large building project, use several furnaces at once. Divide your clay balls between them and keep each furnace supplied with fuel. This does not change the recipe, but it reduces the time needed to process a large clay deposit.

How to craft stone bricks in Minecraft

Stone Bricks are made from regular stone, not from the red brick items used for Bricks blocks. The recipe gives you four Stone Bricks from four stone blocks.

Make regular stone

1. Mine cobblestone with a pickaxe.
2. Place the cobblestone in a furnace.
3. Add fuel to smelt it into regular stone.
4. Collect the stone from the furnace output.

If you have a Silk Touch pickaxe, you can mine regular stone directly instead of smelting cobblestone. Otherwise, every four Stone Bricks requires four regular stone blocks, and each stone block normally comes from one smelted cobblestone.

Craft Stone Bricks

Open a crafting table or inventory crafting grid. Place four regular stone blocks in a 2×2 square. The result is four Stone Bricks.

Place one stone block in each corner of a 2×2 square: two across the first row and two across the second row. The recipe works in any part of the 3×3 crafting table grid.

A stonecutter can also produce Stone Bricks from stone. This is useful when you already have a stonecutter and want to convert stone directly without using the crafting table.

How to make mossy, chiseled, and cracked stone bricks

Stone Bricks have several decorative variants. Each variant uses a different method, so do not look for one universal recipe.

Mossy Stone Bricks

To craft Mossy Stone Bricks, combine one Stone Bricks block with either one vine or one moss block. Place the Stone Bricks and the vine or moss block together in the crafting grid. Their positions do not need to match a fixed pattern, and the recipe produces one Mossy Stone Bricks block.

Vines are commonly found on trees in swamp and jungle areas. Moss blocks can be collected in lush caves or obtained through other moss-related methods. You can also find mossy stone materials naturally in structures and use them as building supplies.

Chiseled Stone Bricks

Craft Chiseled Stone Bricks by placing two Stone Brick Slabs vertically in the crafting grid. Put one slab directly above the other. This produces one Chiseled Stone Bricks block.

Cracked Stone Bricks

Cracked Stone Bricks cannot be crafted in a crafting table. Smelt one regular Stone Bricks block in a furnace with any fuel to produce one Cracked Stone Bricks block.

1. Open a furnace.
2. Place one Stone Bricks block in the upper input slot.
3. Add fuel to the lower slot.
4. Collect one Cracked Stone Bricks block from the output slot.

There is no 2×2 crafting recipe for cracked stone bricks. A stonecutter does not create the cracked variant either. If you need a weathered wall, smelting is the reliable survival method, although cracked stone bricks can also generate naturally in structures such as strongholds and igloo basements.

Stone brick recipes at a glance

Regular Stone Bricks are the starting point for most of this block family. Make a batch first, then convert only the number needed for mossy, chiseled, or cracked details.

Java and Bedrock differences

The regular Bricks, Stone Bricks, Mossy Stone Bricks, Chiseled Stone Bricks, and Cracked Stone Bricks recipes are the same in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. You can use the same quantities and crafting-grid layouts on either edition.

Bedrock Edition also contains a separate smooth stone bricks variant in its block data. It is not a normal survival recipe and is not part of the standard Stone Bricks crafting path, so use regular Stone Bricks when following this guide.

Common mistakes and faster alternatives

• Using cobblestone in the Stone Bricks recipe: Smelt cobblestone into regular stone first. Cobblestone does not craft into Stone Bricks.
• Confusing brick items with Bricks blocks: Smelt clay balls into brick items, then craft four brick items into one block.
• Looking for a cracked crafting recipe: Cracked Stone Bricks require furnace smelting, not a crafting table.
• Using a blast furnace for cracked stone bricks: Use a regular furnace for this smelting recipe.
• Expecting one clay ball to make a block: One clay ball creates one brick item. Four clay balls are needed for one Bricks block.
• Mining Stone Bricks without a pickaxe: Use a pickaxe when collecting naturally generated Stone Bricks, or the block drops nothing.
