Craft a bucket with three iron ingots and use it for water, lava, milk, and more.

How do you make a bucket on Minecraft? Use a crafting table and place three iron ingots in a V shape: one in the left-middle slot, one in the right-middle slot, and one in the center-bottom slot. This recipe creates one empty bucket, which you can use to carry water, lava, milk, powder snow, and some aquatic mobs.

How do you make a bucket on Minecraft?

You need three iron ingots and a crafting table. A bucket does not require wood, sticks, stone, or any other ingredient. The recipe works in the standard crafting grid used by both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

Required itemQuantityHow to get it
Iron ingot3Smelt raw iron or iron ore in a furnace or blast furnace
Crafting table1Craft four planks from one log

The crafting-grid layout is a V shape. Put one iron ingot in the middle slot of the left column, one in the middle slot of the right column, and one in the bottom slot of the center column. Leave the entire top row empty, along with the bottom-left and bottom-right slots.

Bucket recipe layout

  • Top row: empty, empty, empty
  • Middle row: iron ingot, empty, iron ingot
  • Bottom row: empty, iron ingot, empty

When the three ingots are placed correctly, the bucket appears in the result slot. Move it into your inventory to finish crafting.

How to get iron for a bucket

The usual way to get the three iron ingots is to mine iron ore or deepslate iron ore, then smelt the raw iron or ore in a furnace. You also need fuel such as coal, charcoal, wood, or another furnace fuel.

  1. Find iron ore underground, in exposed stone, or in other areas where ore is visible.
  2. Mine the ore with a stone pickaxe or a stronger pickaxe. A wooden pickaxe cannot collect it correctly.
  3. Place the raw iron or iron ore in the top slot of a furnace.
  4. Put fuel in the bottom slot.
  5. Collect the iron ingots from the output slot when smelting finishes.

Three raw iron items produce three iron ingots when smelted individually. If you mine iron ore with a pickaxe enchanted with Fortune, the amount of raw iron can vary, so you may have enough for a bucket sooner. Iron ingots can also appear in some generated structure chests, making exploration another possible way to obtain them.

Do you need a furnace?

You need a furnace if you are starting with raw iron or iron ore. You do not need one if you already have three iron ingots. To make a furnace, place eight cobblestone, cobbled deepslate, or blackstone blocks around the outside of a crafting table, leaving the center slot empty.

How to craft a bucket step by step

Once you have the ingredients, crafting the item takes only a few seconds.

  1. Open your crafting table to use the three-by-three crafting grid.
  2. Place an iron ingot in the middle-left slot.
  3. Place a second iron ingot in the middle-right slot.
  4. Place the third iron ingot in the bottom-center slot.
  5. Take the empty bucket from the result slot.

The recipe does not need to be arranged in your personal two-by-two inventory grid because the pattern uses three rows. If the bucket does not appear, check that you are using iron ingots rather than raw iron, iron ore, iron nuggets, or iron blocks.

How to get a bucket without crafting

Crafting is the most reliable method, but you can sometimes find an empty bucket while exploring. Buckets may appear as loot in certain generated structures, depending on the structure and game version. Chest loot is not guaranteed, so searching for three iron ingots is normally faster than relying on exploration.

You may also find buckets through villager-related gameplay or obtain one from other in-game sources, but these options are less direct for a new survival world. If you are near iron ore, mining and smelting remains the simplest route.

Remember that a bucket found in a chest is already usable. You do not need to repair or activate it before collecting water, lava, milk, or another compatible liquid or block.

What can you use a bucket for?

An empty bucket becomes a filled bucket when you use it on a suitable source. The most important uses are moving fluids, farming, handling animals, and exploring dangerous areas.

  • Water: Collect a water source to create farms, elevators, pools, obsidian, and safe drops.
  • Lava: Collect a lava source for fuel, traps, furnaces, lighting, or Nether portal construction.
  • Milk: Use the bucket on a cow, mooshroom, or goat to collect milk. Drinking milk removes active status effects.
  • Powder snow: Collect powder snow with an empty bucket and place it elsewhere.
  • Fish and aquatic mobs: Use water buckets to collect certain small aquatic mobs, such as fish and axolotls.
  • Farming: Water farmland, move water around crops, and build compact irrigation systems.

A water bucket is especially useful in caves and during mining because it can remove or control lava, create a safe descent, and help you convert lava and water into other blocks. A lava bucket is also an efficient furnace fuel source, although using it consumes the lava bucket and leaves an empty bucket behind.

How to fill and empty a bucket

  1. Hold an empty bucket in your hotbar.
  2. Use it on a compatible source block, animal, or aquatic mob.
  3. Switch to the filled bucket in your hand.
  4. Use the filled bucket on a location where you want to place its contents.

Water and lava buckets generally place a fluid source when used on a suitable block. Milk works differently: you collect it from an animal and drink it, rather than placing it in the world. After you empty a water or lava bucket, the empty bucket remains in your inventory.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition differences

The bucket crafting recipe is the same in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition: three iron ingots arranged in a V shape on a crafting table. The basic process for obtaining iron, crafting the bucket, and collecting water or lava is also the same.

Some bucket interactions involving aquatic mobs, powder snow, villagers, or fluid behavior can vary slightly between editions and updates. If you are following the recipe itself, you do not need a different layout or a different number of ingredients.

Common bucket crafting mistakes

  • Using raw iron: Raw iron must be smelted into iron ingots before it works in the recipe.
  • Using iron nuggets: Nuggets cannot replace ingots in the bucket recipe.
  • Using an inventory grid: The recipe requires a three-by-three crafting table grid.
  • Placing the center ingot too high: The third ingot belongs in the bottom-center slot, not the top-center slot.
  • Expecting multiple buckets: Three iron ingots craft one bucket.
  • Mining iron with a wooden pickaxe: Upgrade to at least a stone pickaxe before mining iron ore.

If you only need one bucket, collect exactly three iron ingots. If you plan to build farms, move lava, or explore the Nether, craft several buckets and keep at least one empty bucket in your storage area. A spare bucket is also useful when your main bucket is filled with lava or milk.
