To change Minecraft username, use Minecraft.net for Java Edition or change your Xbox gamertag for Bedrock Edition. Java profile names can be changed once every 30 days. Bedrock names come from your Microsoft or Xbox gamertag, while PlayStation and Nintendo Switch can also use the console profile name.
What counts as your Minecraft username?
Minecraft uses different names depending on the edition and platform you play on. That is why the steps for Java Edition do not match the steps for Bedrock Edition.
- Java Edition: Your in-game name is your Java profile name.
- Bedrock Edition: Your in-game name is normally your Xbox or Microsoft account gamertag.
- PlayStation: Your name can be your PSN online ID, or your Xbox gamertag if you are signed in to Microsoft through Minecraft.
- Nintendo Switch: Your Minecraft name is normally your Nintendo account nickname unless you are using a linked Microsoft account in a way that changes the displayed profile.
Your Microsoft account email address is not your Minecraft username. The account email identifies your login, while the Java profile name or gamertag is the name other players see.
How to change Minecraft username on Java Edition
Java Edition lets you change your profile name from your Minecraft account page. You do not need to buy the game again, reinstall the launcher, or create a new Microsoft account.
- Open Minecraft.net and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Java Edition.
- Open the All Games section of your account.
- Find Minecraft: Java Edition and select Change Profile Name.
- Enter the new name you want to use.
- Select Change Your Profile Name to confirm.
- Close and reopen the Minecraft Launcher if the old name still appears.
Your Java profile name must be available and meet Minecraft's naming rules. If another player already uses the name, you need to choose a different one.
How often can you change a Java username?
You can change your Java profile name once every 30 days. The waiting period also applies if you want to switch back to your previous name, so check the spelling carefully before confirming the change.
Changing the name does not create a new Minecraft account. Your owned game, single-player worlds, skins, capes, and account progress remain connected to the same Microsoft account. Multiplayer servers may show you under the new name the next time you connect.
How to change your Minecraft username on Bedrock
Bedrock Edition normally uses the gamertag connected to your Xbox or Microsoft account. To change the name shown in Minecraft, change that gamertag rather than looking for a separate Java-style profile-name setting.
- Open Xbox.com and sign in with the Microsoft account connected to Minecraft.
- Open your Xbox profile or account page.
- Select the pencil icon next to your current gamertag.
- Enter the new gamertag you want to use.
- Confirm the change and reopen Minecraft Bedrock Edition.
You can also change it from an Xbox console by pressing the Xbox button, opening Profile & system, selecting your profile, choosing My profile, selecting Customize profile, and then selecting your current gamertag.
Because the gamertag belongs to your Xbox profile, the change can also affect how your name appears in other Xbox-connected games and services. Make sure you are editing the same Microsoft account that Minecraft uses.
How to change Minecraft username on PlayStation and Switch
On consoles, the displayed Minecraft name can depend on both the platform account and the Microsoft account linked to the game.
PlayStation
If you play without signing in to a Microsoft account, Minecraft uses your PlayStation Network online ID. To change that name, change your PSN online ID through PlayStation account settings.
If your PlayStation copy of Minecraft is signed in to a Microsoft account, the game displays your Xbox gamertag instead. In that case, change the gamertag through your Xbox profile. Signing out of Microsoft in Minecraft can make the PSN online ID appear again, but signing out may affect access to cross-platform friends, Realms, and other Microsoft-connected features.
Nintendo Switch
On Nintendo Switch, Minecraft can display your Nintendo account nickname. From the Switch home screen, open your profile in the upper-left corner, open the Profile tab, select the pencil icon, and edit your profile name.
If Minecraft is using a linked Microsoft account and the displayed name is your Xbox gamertag, change the gamertag instead. Check the name shown in the Minecraft profile before deciding which account to edit.
How to find your Minecraft username
If you do not know your current Minecraft username, first identify which edition and account you are using. The name other players need is usually visible in the launcher, profile menu, pause screen, or multiplayer player list.
Find a Java Edition username
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and check the signed-in Microsoft account in the upper-left corner.
- Launch Java Edition and check your player name in a multiplayer player list or on the Minecraft account page.
- On Minecraft.net, open All Games and look under Minecraft: Java Edition for your profile-name settings.
Be careful not to confuse the Microsoft account email, Xbox gamertag, and Java profile name. Java uses the profile name in game, even when the Microsoft account also has a separate gamertag.
Find a Bedrock username
- Launch Bedrock Edition and check the profile or account name shown on the main screen.
- Join a world and open the pause menu.
- Open the Social or player list area to view your gamertag.
- Use Copy Gamertag if you need to send the exact name to a friend.
On Bedrock, the gamertag is the most useful name to share for cross-platform multiplayer. Include any numbers or characters shown with the gamertag rather than sharing only the visible nickname.
What happens after you change your name?
A name change updates the identity other players see, but it does not transfer your account to a different Microsoft account. Your worlds and purchases remain tied to the account you used before the change.
- Single-player worlds: Your saved worlds remain on the same device or account.
- Java servers: Servers may recognize you under the new profile name after you reconnect.
- Bedrock friends: Friends may see your updated gamertag across Microsoft and Xbox services.
- Realms: Your access remains connected to the account, not simply to the text of your old name.
- Skins and purchases: Account-owned content stays with the account that purchased or unlocked it.
Some servers use their own player data, permissions, or name history. If a server does not update your rank or claims after a name change, contact that server's staff instead of creating a second account.
Why your new Minecraft username is not showing
If Minecraft still displays your old name, the game or launcher may still be using cached account information. Work through these fixes in order.
- Exit Minecraft completely rather than returning only to the title screen.
- Close the Minecraft Launcher, then open it again.
- Check that the launcher or console is signed in to the correct Microsoft account.
- For Bedrock, confirm that you changed the gamertag connected to the account used in Minecraft.
- For PlayStation or Switch, check whether the game is showing the console profile name or the linked Microsoft gamertag.
- Reconnect to the world or server after the account information refreshes.
Do not create a new account just because the name has not refreshed. A new account can have separate worlds, purchases, permissions, and multiplayer progress. First verify the account, restart the game, and allow the platform profile to update.
Common mistakes when changing a Minecraft name
- Changing the Microsoft email instead of the visible name: The login email is not the Java profile name or Bedrock gamertag.
- Using Java steps for Bedrock: Bedrock does not use the same profile-name page as Java.
- Changing the wrong account: Shared consoles and launchers can have several Microsoft accounts saved.
- Expecting unlimited Java changes: Java profile names have a 30-day change period.
- Assuming a server owns your name: Your account name comes from Minecraft or your platform, although a server may have separate nicknames and permissions.
The fastest method is simple: use Minecraft.net for Java, Xbox profile settings for Bedrock, PSN settings for an unlinked PlayStation profile, and Nintendo profile settings for a Switch nickname. Identify the name shown in game first, then change the account that controls it.
